Hi
My name is Rob Burnett. I enjoy life as a professional commercial photographer and when I am not taking pictures, among other things, I love riding my bike. My racing days left no mark on history but as I always say, somebody has to make up the numbers to make the winners look good !
I was bitten by the bike bug from an early age. In the sixties I have fond memories of going to the six day races at the York Park Speedway and totally spell bound by the riders of that era like Patto, Gilmore, Ryan, Whetters, Grenda, Panton and the list goes on of the then super stars go on.
The funny thing about the “bike bug” is that if you are bitten, it is usually a sticks for a lifetime.
That is good though and the network of people and personalities you meet in the sport can be diverse and interesting to say the least.
I have created this website to collect some of the classic old images of our rich history of cycling in the state along with a general site for information, news, bike safety and all things BIKE really. Much of the material is either provided to me by riders or families and/or from my own collection of photography which I have taken over the decades.
So, if you happen to be reading this and have some cycling history in the bottom of your draw, give me a bell if you wish, I would love to see it.
It seems smetines to me that York Park Speedway is almost like a lost city. You see little mention of it in general history of Launceston or the
York Park Precinct, yet it was a huge attraction in the years spanning the six day carnivals in the sixties.
A mate of mine, Peter Quill has provided me with a beautiful collection of colour shots from York Park that are just fantastic. Hard to believe that track was ever there if it had not been for the retention of the Railway Buildings.
Anyway, enough from me, you will get the idea of the site I am sure as it takes shape. It is a work in progress at present and will take some time to complete but keep an eye on the new material, there is some great stuff to come.
I hope you enjoy and I would always welcome any suggestions or content.
Cheers
Rob
